This paper analyzes the meaning of existence expressed by two types of Chinese construction,“Zai + L + V”and“V + Zai + L”,from the viewpoint of the semantic feature “directionality”contained by the action named by V.The semantic feature [+directionality] is associated with a dynamic meaning, i.e. the change of location accompanied by movement, whereas [-directionality] is associated with an existential meaning, which can be further divided into two subtypes, namely dynamic and static. Such changes of state as appearance and disappearance, expressed by the two constructions concerned, can be considered as variations of dynamic existence.
