  There have been detailed explanations and analyses in dictionaries, grammar books and related research papers about the usage of “Ken” and the difference between “Ken” and “Yuanyi”. Based on existing research, this paper examines the practical usage patterns of “Ken”, and analyzes its semantic characteristics and pragmatic functions. It further explores the asymmetry between Ken’s positive and negative usage, and Ken’s differences from “Yuanyi”.
  Our investigation and analysis not only confirms some of the findings reported in the literature, but also reveals some new features that have not been reported before. Lastly, we attempt to explain why students often make mistakes when learning and using Ken, and provide some guidance on how to correct these mistakes.
